Here are some questions to ask your doctor or pharmacist about medication you are prescribed:
- What is the name of the medication? Is it known by other names? Is it a brand name or generic?
- What is the recommended dosage? How many times a day will I take it?
- How long will I be taking this medication?
- Are there any laboratory tests that I need before beginning this medication or while I'm taking it?
- Should I take the medication with food?
- Are there any medications, foods, or supplements I should avoid while taking this medication?
- When should I anticipate the medication to begin to work?
- How will I know if the medication is working for me?
- If I stop taking it, what are the chances of my symptoms returning?
- Is there any chance my symptoms will be worse once I stop?
- What would happen to my physical health if I stopped taking the medication?
- What are the side effects that commonly occur with this medication?
- What are the less common but more serious side effects that can occur?
- What specific side effects should I anticipate with this medication?
- How long should I anticipate side effects?
- Is this medication addictive? Can it be abused?
